Misuzu Yamaji
Solo Show
Misuzu Yamaji
“The freedom of a heart bursting with energy transcends time and space-leading to a smiling light.”
Caelum Gallery is proud to present a one-person show by the artist Misuzu Yamaji.
The distinction between painting and drawing in some art is clear, while in others it is not. In the case of Misuzu Yamaji, who is having her first show in New York, her works have aspects of both. The small works are abstracted linear female faces that are reminiscent of Inuit art. Produced with pencil on board, they possess Japanese hallmarks of precision and a balance between strength and delicacy. The large works are the opposite; they are diffused and atmospheric. The marks the artist makes are like atoms floating in space that sometimes coalesce into vaguely recognizable forms.
The two polls of flat, graphic lines that resolve into faces, and pointillist abstractions are invigorating contrasts in this handsome show.
